The Centenary of Northumberland Constabulary - 1957
An amateur film made to celebrate the centenary of the Northumberland County Constabulary in 1957. The film shows the Duke of Northumberland inspect officers and cadets in Carlisle Park followed by a march through the town.
The Duke is seen inside The Court House unveiling a plaque and being presented with what appears to be a silver ash tray. Officers and cadets march past the Duke at The Kylins followed by two officers in historic uniforms.
The Duke is seen talking to a number of elderly gentlemen, possibly former officers. The film end with views of people enjoying afternoon tea in a garden setting.
Coronation Celebrations at Gateshead - 1953
An amateur film made by John W. McHugh and Robert Wilson for the County Borough of Gateshead of various coronation celebrations taking place around the borough including Saltwell Park.
Activities shown include the presentation of a commemorative bench, Mayor’s Sunday parade, coronation decorated streets, Open School dance displays in Saltwell Park, a performance of “Merrie England” by the Gateshead Operatic and Dramatic Society, the Youth Day procession of decorated floats from the likes of the YMCA, The Red Cross and Denwell Avenue Youth Club. The film ends with a marching band and horticulture show taking place in Saltwell Park.
Princess Elizabeth War Days Parade
An amateur film of a visit by Princess Elizabeth to Newcastle to participate in the War Days, possibly Flag Days, parade. The film opens with a street procession of military personnel marching past a number of local dignitaries and an unidentified military officer in dress uniform. The procession includes a large float in the shape of a warship. There is a view of Grey’s Monument with a large sign around the base reading “Another Million”. This is followed by a military and civilian inspection taking place at St James Park by Herbert Morrison. He is seen giving a speech.
The next part of the film shows Princess Elizabeth arriving and inspecting a number of women drivers as well as a number of cooks all of whom are standing beside their vehicles. She is then seen in an unknown street presenting a trophy to a soldier followed by a large procession on military personnel and vehicles along an unknown Newcastle Street. The film end with her inspecting military and civilian personnel at St James Park.
