Advice for parents and carers
Discuss the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships with children to help highlight any potential risks to them.
Make time for them, show affection, listen to them and give them confidence.
Other practical steps that can be taken include:
Recognising changes in their behaviour or any physical signs of abuse like bruising.
Being aware of new, unexplained gifts or possessions or access to drugs and alcohol and carefully monitoring if they are staying out late or not returning home.
Being aware of any older friends they have or relationships with other young people where there appears to be an imbalance of power.
Being aware of the risks associated with social media and make sure measures are in place to minimise the risks.
