Consulting with Residents

Here at Northumbria Police we want to make sure we are dealing with the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that matter in your local area. We work in partnership with your local council and the criminal justice system. Our resident’s survey, known as the Safer Communities Survey, helps us all to identify the community safety and quality of life issues that local people are facing, and want us to deal with.

Q. Who is asked to take part?

A. We ring a selection of households with a landline telephone number each month and ask them spend 10 – 15 minutes discussing the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that matter in their local area. Anyone who is over 16 years old may take part.

Q. How did you get my number?

A. We use a list of automatically generated landline telephone numbers (a process known as random digit dial), that are bought from a company.

Q. My number is ex-directory, can you still call me?

A. Yes, calls made for the purpose of research are able to use ex-directory numbers and those registered on the telephone preference system (only sales and marketing calls are prevented). We use a list of automatically generated landline telephone numbers (a process known as random digit dial), so we may call ex-directory telephone numbers.

We do value your opinion and would like the opportunity to discuss your local area with you, but if you do not wish to take part in this or future surveys tell this to our interviewer and ask to be permanently removed from our contact lists.

Q. What happens if I am out when you call?

A. If you are out when we call, we will try you again at a different time of the day. Our telephone Contact Unit, within the Public Insight Team at Northumbria Police Headquarters is open weekdays (10am until 8:30pm Monday – Thursday or 10am until 5pm on a Friday) and at a weekend (10am until 6pm).

Q. How do I know the call is genuine?

A. The interviewer will always give you their name, tell you where they are calling from and explain why they are calling.

If you are still unsure if the call is genuine, the interviewer will offer you the Northumbria Police non-emergency telephone number and their extension number so you can call our switchboard to check we are who we say we are.

Q. What if I don’t have time to take part right now?

A. We are happy to make an appointment to call you at a more convenient time.

Q. Do I have to take part?

A. No, but we do value your opinion and would like the opportunity to discuss the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that matter to you in your local area, as well as your general opinion of the police and other partners.

Q. What do you want to ask me?

A. The questions are about community safety and quality of life in your local area. We want to know:

  • what you think about your local area,

  • if you think there are any problems in your local area and what they are,

  • if we are communicating effectively

  • your thoughts of Neighbourhood Policing Teams,

  • your thoughts about your local council,

  • and your opinion of community safety partners and partnership working.

Q. Who are these partners you work with?

A. Northumbria Police work together with partners to make your area a safer place to live. These partners are:

  • the six local councils in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear,

  • Police & Crime Commissioner for Northumbria,

  • the National Probation Service in Northumbria,

  • and the Local Criminal Justice Board.

As we already work together, the partners decided it made sense to only survey you once about community safety issues, and then work together to resolve any problems or concerns raised.

Q. What do you use the information for?

A. The results of the survey help Neighbourhood Policing Teams and your local council to tackle any problems you identify in your area. We use the information to make sure our local officers are giving people in your area the service you need, and are communicating effectively with you.

Q. Someone wants to come to my home to carry out a Crime Survey for England and Wales, is this genuine?

A. The Crime Survey for England and Wales is carried out  by British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) on behalf of the Office for National Statistics. This is done by visiting people in their homes. You should receive a letter in advance advising you of the appointment and a number to ring if you wish to opt out.

You should always ask for ID before letting someone into your home, and if unsure, you can ring the Crime Survey for England and Wales Information Line on 0800 051 0882.
