Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 19 April 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

  1. Please provide data on how many officers have
    a) resigned or
    b) retired prior to the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings in each calendar year since 2009. (If calendar year data is unavailable, financial year data is acceptable.)

  2. Of those, how many later appeared in court?

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Professional Standards department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

The following information has been extracted from a Live database and may be subject to the addition and deletion of complaints, complainants and subjects after the initial extraction of data used for the purposes of this report.  Data has been extracted based upon officers who have an end of service date between 01/01/2009 and 31/12/2011 and have resigned during investigation, cases for which the results for officers is retired/resigned for which the dates of resignation/retirement fall within this period.  The information below relates to Police Officers only, CSO’s, Special Constables and other police staff have not been included.  Please note that cases which are live, sub judice or in the appeal period have not been included.

Please note that for Q2, this has been based on a court appearance linked to the conduct/complaint case in which the officer retired or resigned and this information has only been included when the officer has resigned/retired and then appeared at court following the resignation/retirement.

Resigned Officers

2009 = 17 officers / 2 appeared at court following resignation

2010 = 14 officers / 3 appeared at court following resignation

2011 = 12 officers / 1 appeared at court following resignation

Retired Officers

2009 = 5 officers / None appeared at court following retirement

2010 = 3 officers / None appeared at court following retirement

2011 = 5 officers / None appeared at court following retirement
