Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 28 February 2012 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

"When I use the word 'customers' I am relating to 'customers' that a taxi driver has picked up as a fare. I would like statistics for the following calendar years: 2008 / 2009 / 2010 / 2011

  1. Number of taxi drivers who have reported being the victim of bilking (non payment of fare)?

  2. Number of customers charged with bilking (non payment of fare)?

  3. Number of customers charged with the homicide of a taxi driver?

  4. Number of customers charged with wounding or other act endangering the life of a taxi driver?

  5. Number of customers charged with inflicting GBH with intent on a taxi driver?

  6. Number of customers charged with racially or religiously aggravated GBH with intent on a taxi driver?

  7. Number of customers charged with ABH on a taxi driver?

  8. Number of customers charged with racially or religiously aggravated ABH on a taxi driver?

  9. Number of customers charged with threat or conspiracy to murder a taxi driver?

  10. Number of customers charged with assault on a taxi driver?

  11. Number of customers charged with racially or religiously aggravated assault on a taxi driver?

  12. Number of customers charged with causing sexual activity without consent on a taxi driver?

  13. Number of customers charged with robbing a taxi driver?

  14. Number of customers charged with aggravated taking of a taxi?

  15. Number of customers charged with the theft of an item from a taxi?

  16. Number of customers charged with criminal damage on a taxi?

  17. Number of customers charged with racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage on a taxi?

  18. Number of customers charged with kidnapping a taxi driver?"

We contacted you to advise that we would not be able to extract the data to the level of 'customer' and that we could supply the results for all offenders, which includes customers and non-customer.  You agreed that you were happy to receive the information that could be provided.  Therefore we have processed your request by replacing 'customers' with 'offenders'.

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

As advised previously this request has been aggregated with your previous request, FOI 206/12 - Crimes Against Taxi Drivers, due to the cost and time implications as it refers to the same subject area.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Please note:-

  • Your questions have been answered to the Home Office offence code that provides the nearest answer to your query and figures provided for questions 2 - 18 includes all offenders (both customers and non-customers).

  • The figures provided for the questions identified below, are for the following offence types:-
    10 Common assault and battery  /  Inflicting grievous bodily harm, without intent
    11 Racially aggravated common assault
