Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 30 September 2014 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

 I would like to know about domestic violence.

Please provide the following information: 

1) The total of calls made about domestic violence broken down into the years 2012, 2013, and 2014. 
To clarify this would mean the total number of calls received by the police on either emergency or non-emergency numbers relating to reports of incidents of domestic violence. 


2) Out of the total given in question one, how many arrests were made in the year 2012, 2013 and 2014.

I would like to receive the information for the last three years, up until this request is answered, in electronic format.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Communications Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.


In this response, we will be referring to "Domestic Abuse" and not "Domestic Violence". The Home Office broadened its definition, captured in the term "abuse", rather than "violence", some years ago and we work to the Home Office definition.

We are not able to identify how many telephone calls we received in relation to domestic abuse. However, when we receive new reports of any type, we record an incident log. The numbers quoted in this response relate to incident logs and not calls. It is possible that some incidents were reported by more than one person, via more than one call; however, this response relates to incident logs.

It is not possible to give a total number of actual arrests without exceeding the time limit associated with supporting a Freedom of Information request. Instead, we can identify how many of the incident logs previously mentioned have arrests associated with them. Whilst many incident logs will be associated with only one arrest, it is also likely that some will be associated with more than one. In this response, we can tell you how many of the incident logs we mention resulted in at least one arrest.

The years 2012 and 2013 are complete. The current year, 2014, contains data for the first nine months, January to September, complete.
