Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 12 November 2014 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

 This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

How many transphobic hate crimes were recorded in the years 2012, 2013 and for the period 1st January 2014 to 11th November 2014?
 
If it falls within the time/cost limit, could you brief outline the nature of each crime?

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

2012 - 5
2013 - 2
2014 - 9 - up to 11/11/14

Offender uses threatening and abusive words intending to stir up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.
Offenders shout abuse.  IP believes she has been targeted due to being transgender.
Offender whilst in a public place uses language that intentionally causes distress to the victim, offender targets victim due to victim's appearance and background.
Offender subjects IP to abuse in relation to her transgender status.
Offender makes derogatory and sexual comments towards IP.
Offenders shout abuse at IP.
Abusive remarks made.
Three unknown persons approach IP, push to the ground then kick to body, arms and legs several times, then make off.
Offender makes offensive and insulting comments referring to the transgender of IP causing harassment, alarm and distress.
Offender has used offensive language towards IP.
Offender verbally abuses victim causing distress.
Offenders use foul and abusive language towards victim causing alarm, harassment and distress.
Offender approaches property, shouts verbal abuse and makes off.
Offender shouts verbal abuse to IP.  Also using threatening language and behaviour causing IP to fear for own safety.
Offender approaches IP verbally abuses her in relation to her being transgender.  The male then punches the IP before leaving the store.
Offender shouts homophobic abuse.
