Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 2 August 2013 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I seek the following information about hate crimes:

  1. How many hate crimes have been recorded so far throughout 2013?

  2. How many hate crimes were recorded in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively?

  3. Please break down the figures for 2013 in terms of crimes that were logged as homophobic/transphobic, racial, disability-related or based on religion.

  4. As above, please break down the figures for 2010, 2011 and 2012.

  5. What were the nature of the hate crimes?  Please give a breakdown regarding types of crime, i.e. assault, criminal damage, etc and if possible, also categorise it in terms of the group it was aimed at – ie. Whether it was homophobic/racist/disabilist in nature.

  6. How many arrests were made in relation to hate crime during 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 so far?

  7. How much does the force budget annually to tackle hate crime?

  8. How is that budget spent?

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Crime and Corporate Development Departments  of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

7&8.  No information held.  Northumbria Police do not separately budget or monitor spend for tackling hate crime. However I can advise that where overtime is incurred at an area command as a result of a hate  incident then that will be paid for from area command overtime budget.

In terms of hate crime strategy and development,  I can advise that Northumbria Police currently have a Detective Chief Inspector and a Detective Sergeant working within the Protecting Vulnerable People Unit developing the forces response to hate crime and incidents.
