Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 15 August 2013 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

1. Please provide figures on the number of drivers who have driven out of petrol station forecourts without paying in the year 2012. Please give: 
(a) the number of reports of this happening, 
(b) the number of arrests made for this, 
(c) the number of these arrests that resulted in sentencing.

2. Please provide figures on crimes that have taken place in churches. Please give: 
(a) the number of reports of crimes in churches, 
(b) the number of arrests for crimes committed in churches, 
(c) the number of these arrests that have resulted in sentencing.
If possible, please also include a description/category of the crime, e.g. theft/ assault, etc.

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

The information provided in question 1 includes only those crimes committed using some form of vehicle, and the information in response to question 2 includes any offence committed within the grounds/premises of a church or place of worship in the year 2012. 

1. (a) 339 which comprises of the following reports

    Making off without payment   213
    Other theft    126

    (b) 42
    (c) 19

2. (a) 170 which comprises of the following reports

     Burglary     38
     Criminal damage    35
     Drug offences      6
     Other theft and handling  69
     Robbery      2
    Theft from motor vehicle    8
    Theft of a pedal cycle    5
    Violence against the person  7
    (b) 34
    (c) 12

Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another.  Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data.  For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.

How to complain
