Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 18 February 2014  in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

 I would like to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act regarding people who break the law but are under the age of criminal responsibility (i.e. under 10).

1) Please provide the figure for the number of individuals who are under the age of criminal responsibility who have broken laws in 2013, 2012, 2011.

2) Please provide a list of all cases of individuals under the age of criminal responsibility who have broken the law for each year. For each case, please specify:
- age
- sex
- the law(s) that was broken (e.g. theft)

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Strategy and Performance Unit of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Please note, we can not supply a figure for the number of individuals who are under the age of criminal responsibility who have broken laws in the time periods specified.  We can can only provide information that is recorded on our systems, ie those instances that have come to the attention of Northumbria Police.
The information provided below therefore is 'recorded' information, which is the result of searches made for all persons under the age of 10 where they have been arrested in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013.

2013 - None

Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another.  Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data.  For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.

How to complain
