Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 4 March 2013 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked: 

  1. The annual revenue cost of maintaining and staffing custody suites in your force in 2011-12 (not including capital costs or pension costs for staff). 

  2. The number of custody suites, including number of cells, maintained by the force during this period (2011-12). 

  3. The average number of warranted police officers employed in custody roles in custody suites at any one time, during this period (2011-12).

    To clarify:

    By maintaining, I meant all ongoing revenue costs associated with that facility (but crucially excluding capital costs), so to include staffing, utilities, and maintenance. 

On point 3, I refer specifically to permanent members of staff.

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the HR and Criminal Justice Departments of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. The budget for custody suites is not costed as a separate budget, so we do not hold that information.

  2. 13 suites - 8 x 24/7 with 177 cells in total,
     
    2 x Resilience (overspill so only staffed when required) with 49 cells in total 

    3 x Rural (only staffed when required) with 21 cells in total

  3. During the period 2011-12, the average number of Custody Sgts was 80 full time equivalents.

Due to the different methods of recording information across 43 forces, a specific response from one constabulary should not be seen as an indication of what information could be supplied (within cost) by another.  Systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data.  For this reason responses between forces may differ, and should not be used for comparative purposes.

How to complain
