13 people have been arrested in two days of action across Sunderland and South Tyneside.
The arrests were made yesterday (Wednesday) and today (Thursday) as part of targeted action to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.
Among those arrested were violent offenders wanted in connection with domestic incidents.
During the operation Officers also enforced 6 Domestic violence protection notices, ensuring that the perpetrators were abiding by the notices and reassuring the victims. A DVPN offers short term protection to victims of domestic abuse giving them respite from their perpetrator. It also allows for a cooling off period for the perpetrator.
Detective Inspector Lynne Colledge said: "Victims of domestic abuse are let down by those they trust the most which can often leave them feeling isolated and alone. Our job is to make sure they are supported, that they have the help and support they need and that they are protected from any further harm by their abuser.
"The purpose of the past two days has been to protect those who are most vulnerable to domestic abuse and target those causing them harm. Perpetrators may think they can get away with their violent or coercive behaviour but, even if the victim does not want police to take any further action, we have powers at our disposal to step in and we will not hesitate to do so.
"Our absolute priority is to look after those, who for whatever reason, are unable to look after themselves and this could be because they are frightened of the person doing this to them or fear if they leave they will be left with nothing, or that there will be repercussions.
"If anyone is a victim of domestic abuse I would like to offer my assurance we will make sure they have the support they need to make sure they are safe and help them move on from the traumatic ordeal and move on with their lives."
