UPDATE: Death of Gateshead man now being treated as murder

Police are now treating the death of a man in Gateshead as murder.

At around 3pm on Wednesday (March 1) afternoon police received information regarding a possible body in a back lane in Northbourne Street.

Officers attended and found the body of a man in a wheelie bin.

He has now been identified as Craig Eade, 23, of Gateshead, and specialist officers are supporting his family at this difficult time.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish how Craig died but following a post-mortem his death is now being treated as murder.

A 36-year-old man this evening remains in police custody after being arrested in connection with the offence.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and extra officers are on patrol in the area to carry out enquiries and speak to any concerned members of the public.
