Police are currently supporting the fire service at the scene of a fire in Newcastle.

At around 8.30am this morning (Sunday) police received a report of a fire at a block of flats on Haydon Close in Gosforth.

Emergency services attended and the fire service have since been able to bring the fire under control.

A number of residents were evacuated whilst the emergency services dealt with the incident but they have since returned to their homes.

Nobody is believed to have been injured and none of those evacuated required any medical treatment.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire but police want to reassure the public that there is no link between this incident and the fire in Whitley Bay last night.

If you did see anything suspicious in the area earlier this morning, or have any useful information for police, then contact officers on 101 quoting log 308 07/05/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
