Serious injury collision in Newbiggin

Police are appealing for witnesses following a one vehicle serious injury collision in Newbiggin in Northumberland.

 

At 8.47pm on Sunday, May 7, police received a report of a collision involving a Ford Focus car travelling eastbound on the A197, Woodhorn Lane near to the junction with West View.

 

For reasons yet to be established, the Ford Focus collided with a lamp post near to the junction which resulted in a 19-year-old male passenger of the vehicle suffering serious head injuries. He remains in the Royal Victoria Infirmary receiving treatment for life threatening injuries.

 

The road was closed in both directions for approximately two hours to allow for collision investigation to take place.

 

The driver, an 18-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs and on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is detained in custody, helping police with their enquiries.

 

Enquiries are on-going into the collision and anyone who was in the area around the time it happened, or who witnessed the collision, are asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1024 07/05/17 with any information .
