Neighbourhood officers from Newcastle West have now moved to a new nearby community base.
The re-location to Westgate Community College, on West Road in Newcastle has taken place today, (Monday, July 17, 2017).
Neighbourhood officers are now based in an office in the busy college campus which is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Officers will also use the base seven days a week as part of their daily routine.
The move follows detailed public consultation at locations across the west end of the city with officers also discussing the issue at community meetings.
This move demonstrates the commitment of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird QC, to ensure police officers are based close to the communities they serve and residents tell us that the College is an ideal location. All savings made from the move will be reinvested back into policing.
Central Area Command Chief Superintendent Neil Hutchison said: "We're delighted to make this move to the community base at the college. The College is a busy location visited by hundreds of students each week as well as attracting large numbers from the wider community who use the facilities there. It makes great sense to re-locate our officers here and will help us reach new people, as well as being easily accessible by local residents and businesses.”
Now the neighbourhood team have relocated, Newcastle West police station will now be put up for sale proceeds from any future sale being put back into policing.
