Bensham rape appeal to speak to dog walker

Police are keen to speak to a witness who may have information which could help with an ongoing rape investigation.

The rape happened at around 1.30am on the August Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday, August 27) in a park area near to Bensham Road, Gateshead.

A 39 year old man was arrested at the time and has been released under investigation.

Police are keen to speak to  a man who was walking his dog in the park shortly after midnight.

Detectives have reviewed CCTV footage which shows the man speaking with the victim in the park next to Elysium Lane. After speaking to the victim he then left in the direction of Alston Street.

The CCTV does not show a very clear picture of the man but it is hoped this information may encourage him to come forward as a witness as he may have vital information to help this investigation.

Police may release the images of the witness should no further information come to light. 

If anyone who knows someone who walks their dog in this area late at night, they are also asked to contact police.
