Police are appealing for information following an arson attack at an address in South Shields.

At 4.04am, on Thursday, July 3, police received a report of a fire at Flagg Court.

Early investigations indicate a wheelie bin had been set alight before being pushed against the house's front door.

The occupants were inside the address at the time of the fire but weren't injured as a result. Fire damage was caused to the door and smoke damage to the inside of the premises.

Investigations into the incident are underway and police are keen to speak to any witnesses.

Detective Inspector Paul Woods, from Northumbria Police's Major Crime Team, said: "Our investigations into this arson are underway and we're asking any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

"Thankfully no-one was injured as a result.

"We know incidents of this nature can cause concern in the community. We have officers patrolling to offer reassurance and I'd ask people to speak to them with any concerns they have or any information on the arson."

People can also contact police on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 150 03/07/14, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
