March 2018 : Youth Disorder
We have seen an increase in anti-social behaviour by young people in Byker since the start of 2018. Youths from across the city (not just Byker) have been responsible for it, with many of them using the Metro system to travel to here. The majority of them have been between 8 and 15 years old, with most of the issues taking place during evenings & at weekends. Increases in youth disorder have been seen across the Newcastle area during this same period.
What we are doing about it
We have been working closely with parents, schools, businesses, council leaders & housing providers to address the issue, and we have dedicated two officers to work solely on tackling it. Patrols have been stepped up in key locations, and specialist resources have been drafted in to assist. Each anti-social behaviour incident is being treated as a crime investigation, with extensive enquiries being conducted in order to identify the perpetrators. Efforts are being concentrated on those individuals whom we have identified as ring leaders, with offenders being targeted via both criminal and civil means. Diversionary opportunities and safeguarding issues are also being examined, and cameras are being employed to good effect.
By taking a firm grip of the issue, our intention is to deal with it promptly and effectively before the weather improves & the evenings become longer.
