School children and families across Northumberland are learning about on-line safety as part of an international Internet Safety Day.
Tuesday, February 7, is World Internet Safety Day, which aims to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people.
To help raise awareness of the importance of being safe online officers from the county’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams are visiting secondary schools to talk to pupils about cyber crime and how to protect themselves online.
Issues around bullying on social networking sites, how to stop receiving unwanted messages, and the dangers of so called ‘sexting’ will also be discussed. Officers are advising youngsters to think carefully about the content they post online and have reminded them that these images have the potential to be shared worldwide with strangers and online criminals.
Officers are also bringing these important safety messages to a wider audience to include parents and people of all ages.
